3 ways to license company data: direct, marketplace or referral

By Automati · Updated

How we prepare these guides

A company can explore a direct agreement with a buyer, offer a prepared data product through a marketplace, or ask a referral service to help prepare a possible introduction. Choose according to buyer access, preparation capacity and who will manage the process. None of these routes guarantees demand, clears rights or establishes a price.

Compare the three routes at a glance

The useful question is who will do the work between an initial description and an agreed license. Finding a relevant buyer, preparing records, checking restrictions and operating delivery are separate jobs. A service may help with some of them without taking responsibility for all of them.

This is a comparison of routes, not a ranking of providers. Automati publishes this guide and is an independent referral service. We may receive a referral fee if a deal completes. The platform examples below are not Automati partners or buyers, and their inclusion does not establish that your records qualify.

1. Explore a direct agreement with a buyer

In a direct route, your company discusses a possible license with the organization proposing to license the records. This is worth considering when you already know a relevant prospect or can devote time to identifying one. You do not need to turn every retained file into a public listing to begin a high-level conversation.

Prepare a short description of one workflow: what the records capture, their accessible history, approximate quantity and the questions still unresolved. Ask what the proposed buyer actually needs for training, evaluation or another stated use. A broad interest in AI is not evidence that a particular buyer wants your dataset.

The tradeoff is coordination. Decide who will respond to questions, evaluate a proposed agreement and organize any separately approved sample. Ask who pays preparation costs and what happens if the review ends without a license. A direct discussion does not establish that it will be faster, cheaper or more profitable than another route.

  • Useful starting point: a known prospect with a specific use and a clear point of contact.
  • Work remaining: buyer fit, rights questions, commercial terms and a separately agreed sharing process.
  • Ask before proceeding: which legal entity would sign, what uses would be permitted and who would receive access?

2. Offer a prepared data product through a marketplace

A data marketplace is a route for making a defined product available through a platform. It is worth investigating when your team can document, deliver and support that product. A folder of mixed operating records and a maintained data product are different starting points.

AWS Data Exchange is one example. Its documentation describes data products published in AWS Marketplace, with offers defining terms and access to datasets. Its provider process includes seller registration, qualification and data-eligibility checks, as well as support and update requirements. A marketplace listing is not evidence that an AI buyer will subscribe.

Snowflake is another example. Its documentation distinguishes public Marketplace listings from private listings shared with specific consumers. Public Marketplace listings require review and approval; provider setup, prepared data and applicable account permissions are part of the process. A private listing can be a delivery route for an existing relationship rather than a way to discover a new buyer.

Compare the actual onboarding work, delivery environment, platform charges, product terms and support commitments before choosing. Confirm any AI-training or evaluation use in the applicable agreement; the ability to share a dataset through a platform does not settle those questions.

  • Useful starting point: a scoped product, someone responsible for delivery and a reason the platform’s consumers would need it.
  • Work remaining: meet current provider requirements and prepare the listing, documentation and support process.
  • Ask before proceeding: what must be supplied publicly, what can stay private, and what costs continue without a sale?

3. Use a referral service to prepare a possible introduction

A referral route is worth considering when you want help describing the records and deciding what to ask before approaching a potential buyer. Check the particular service’s scope: an introduction, data preparation, legal review and negotiation are different services. Do not assume they are all included.

Automati is an example of an independent referrer. Our initial review accepts high-level company and record descriptions, without uploads, passwords or system connections. We help describe the opportunity and prepare a possible introduction. We do not buy records, set their price or guarantee an offer.

You decide whether to permit an introduction. The relevant buyer evaluates fit and proposes any license, price and data-handling terms. Your company reviews those terms before deciding. Automati may receive a referral fee if a deal completes; a completed initial form grants no license and does not itself authorize an introduction.

If you already have a suitable buyer and can manage the discussion, a direct route may meet your needs. If you want a repeatable platform product, investigate marketplace requirements. Use a referral service when its actual help addresses a gap in your process.

  • Useful starting point: a high-level description and a clear question about a possible buyer conversation.
  • Work remaining: resolve questions about the selected records and review any buyer’s proposed scope and terms.
  • Ask before proceeding: what exactly will the service do, how is it paid, and what happens if no introduction or offer follows?

Choose a first step before exporting anything

Start with an inventory, whichever route you investigate. Identify a workflow, the systems holding it, accessible years, approximate volume and the person who can answer questions. Keep actual records inside your company during this preparation.

For example, a manufacturer describing quote revisions, planning decisions and quality resolutions might start with a high-level buyer or referrer discussion. A company already maintaining a documented dataset with a delivery and support team might investigate a marketplace. These are illustrative starting points, not eligibility decisions.

For every route, ask your company and advisers to review customer-supplied material, confidentiality obligations, personal information and other restrictions against the proposed use. Ask who would prepare and check a sample, which records would be excluded and how access would end. Keep unknowns visible rather than treating a stored file as cleared for licensing.

If Automati’s referral process fits your next step, the initial review asks for descriptions only. The preparation checklist and private inventory builder can help organize those descriptions; neither is a valuation or a decision that your company can license the records.
