Professional-services data licensing: start with internal know-how
By Automati · Updated
A professional-services company can begin by describing its internal methods, revisions and operational decisions. Client deliverables and confidential client material need separate attention; a folder of project files is not automatically a licensable dataset.
Describe the company’s own work first
Consider how your team scopes a task, reviews alternatives, checks a draft and records a lesson for the next project. Some of that history may be in internal procedures, planning records or training materials. Start by identifying the category and the questions it raises.
An illustrative example: a technical-services team updates its internal review checklist after a recurring handoff problem. Earlier versions and the reason for the change describe an operating decision. This is a planning example, not a customer result or a confirmed licensing opportunity.
Separate internal know-how from client material
Do not treat ‘created by our team’ as a complete answer to ownership and confidentiality. The proposed use, actual contracts and applicable obligations need review by the company and its advisers.
| Category | Question to resolve |
|---|---|
| Internal procedures | Which parts are original company material and which incorporate outside content? |
| Project decision history | Does it reveal confidential client work or third-party information? |
| Templates and training | Are any licenses or customer-specific restrictions attached? |
| Client deliverables | Who controls reuse and what would the proposed use permit? |
| Support and correspondence | What personal information and confidential material would need separate review? |
Prepare a high-level account, not a project export
List the systems, accessible history and languages. Give a general description of the workflow and the roles involved. Avoid naming a client, reproducing a message or attaching a real deliverable in the initial conversation.
If the history mixes internal and client work, mark that as an unresolved boundary. Removing names alone does not establish permission or resolve every confidentiality question.
Use the first conversation to decide what needs checking
Ask the potential buyer what it needs and how it would assess the opportunity. Identify which internal people can answer system, contract and approval questions. Any later sample or access request should have a separately agreed scope and process.
Automati helps prepare a possible introduction. It does not clear rights, provide a valuation or guarantee a buyer offer. An initial description is enough to begin exploring whether a further conversation is worthwhile.
Automati is an independent referrer and may receive a referral fee if a deal completes. Buyers decide fit and any offer. This guide helps prepare questions; it does not determine rights, eligibility or a dataset’s price.
